Richard, Tom and Myself had a quiet day for a change, so we managed to take a day out and have a look around Plasa Focus Leeds.
Heralded as Celebrating Entertainment Technology & the People behind it, Plasa Focus Leeds brings together the latest innovations in live events and entertainment technology.
200+ renowned brands, many of whom were debuting brand new products, so there was a plethora of shiny toys for us to drool over, as well as an abundance of very expensive bits of kit to dream about one day having a use for.
But as with any of these things, it's also about people and relationships, and having started in this industry in 1990, there were plenty of old (and young) faces around for us to bump into.
Of course, it's not just hardware suppliers that have stands at Plasa, and its always good to get the opportunity to talk to some of the industry support services. In attendance were organisations like the ISCVE (Institute of Sound, Communications & Visual Engineers). The SMA (Stage Management Association), and the union BECTU (Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union)
BECTU in particular have a lot to say as they represent staff, contract and freelance workers in the media and entertainment industries. They are currently lobbying the government regarding Trump's tariffs on US imports of films, which will impact the UK film and TV industry,
“The government must move swiftly to defend this vital sector, and support the freelancers who power it"
They are also fighting on the a home front through their 'Better Festivals campaign' which aims to improve working conditions at UK festivals.
Also in attendance was Plasa's own #WeMakeEvents, still campaigning behind the scenes to ensure our industry gets the recognition and support it deserves.

There was also a packed seminar programme led by industry thought-leaders, on subjects as diverse as the impact of AI on production technology, standards for temporary stage structures and career development in the industry, as well as Live audio demos and practical lighting training.
As is always the case with exhibitions like Plasa, ISE, and InfoComm, you always wish you had more time, and always vow that for the next one you will make time to get more out of the event.
Here's hoping that next time we actually manage it.
